Postoperatif bulantı ve kusma günümüzde (POBK) yaygın bir cerrahi komplikasyon olmaya devam etmektedir. Özellikle günübirlik cerrahi hastalarının erken taburcu edilmesinde engelleyici bir faktördür ve beklenmeyen hastane başvurularının önde gelen bir nedenidir. POBK potansiyel hastane başvuruları, uzamış hemşirelik hizmetleri gibi sağlık giderlerinin miktarını artıran durumlara yol açabilir; ayrıca hasta memnuniyetsizliği ile de ilişkilidir. POBK’nın tedavisinde günümüzde pek çok farklı sınıftan ajan bulunmakla birlikte tedavisi POBK’nın önlenmesinden sıklıkla daha zor ve daha az etkindir. Bu sebeple risk altındaki hastalarda antiemetik profilaksisi mümkün olan en kısa sürede başlatılmalıdır.
