Su kalitesi izleme, nüfus ve kentleşmedeki hızlı büyüme nedeniyle birçok gelişmekte olan ülkeler için en önemli konulardan biridir. Yüzey sularının kalitesi, özellikle kentsel alanlardaki insan sağlığını ve ekolojik sistemleri etkileyen önemli bir faktördür. Su kalitesini değerlendirmek amacıyla son yıllarda pek çok matematiksel formülasyon, modelleme ve hesap yöntemi geliştirilmiştir. Bu değerlendirme yöntemlerinden biride su kalite indeksi kullanımıdır. Su Kalitesi İndeksi (water quality index=WQI), su karakterizasyonu için standart parametrelerin kullanımına dayalı yüzey suyu sınıflandırması için bir kriter vemektedir. WQI kullanımı bilimsel temellerinin kolaylığını göz önünde bulundurarak, dünya çapındaki su kütlelerinin, özellikle nehirlerin su kalitesini değerlendirmede önemli ve popüler araçlar haline gelmiştir. WQI kavramının ilk kullanımından beri, birçok araştırmacı tarafından çeşitli indeksler formüle edilmiş ve geliştirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, su kalitesi değerlendirilmesinde en çok kullanılan hesaplamalar karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmiştir.

Water quality monitoring is one of the most important issues for many developing countries due to rapid growth in population and urbanization. The quality of surface water is an important factor affecting human health and ecological systems, especially in urban areas. In order to evaluate the water quality, many mathematical formulation, modeling and calculation methods have been developed in recent years. One of these evaluation methods is the use of water quality index. The Water Quality Index (WQI) is a criterion for surface water classification based on the use of standard parameters for water characterization. The use of WQI has become an important and popular tool in assessing the water quality of water bodies, especially rivers, taking into account the simplicity of its scientific foundations. Since the first use of the WQI concept, various indices have been formulated and developed by many researchers. In this study, the most commonly used index calculations for water quality assessment were evaluated comparatively.
